Cape Splendor

This past September I traveled back to one of my favorite places to celebrate my 50th birthday, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This is a wonderful place to visit as an artist, photography or if you just want a little chunk of peace in your life. Many wonderful artists, writers, photographers have lived here and continue to find this a place to nurture their creative spirits.

My disclaimer is that I am not a professional photographer but I like to look.. closely... observe my surroundings, always searching for the beauty in all things.

Here are some of my favorite pics.

"Uncle Tim's Bridge" Truro, MA

a private marina in Truro, MA not far from the house Edward Hopper lived in for many years.

The water's edge ebbs and flows and each time presenting to us the earth, beneath our feet, each time a little more worn but beautiful nonetheless.

I am going to post a few more of my favorite pics in the days ahead. Just thought you'd like a sneak peak into this little jewel on earth.

Thought to ponder: Where does a dream go after you've dreamt it?

Thanks for stopping by and as always for your kind words.

Sock Monkey DNA

Today was Monkey Day or Monkee's Day.

Perhaps what started me on this kick was John at Typos.Daylight.Fate. I'm laughing myself silly, but when I got done altering this fractal and rotating the image around, first thought that came to mind was...my what colorful DNA strands, then I saw what looked like an outline of a monkey. ...well I suppose a sock monkey might just have such colorful DNA and...I love sock monkeys and recently came across this fun sock monkey site. Don't sock monkeys make you smile?

Can you see the resemblance?

I also love "The Monkees" as in Davey Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith. As a matter of fact these vintage mags are expected to arrive at my doorstep any day now. The exact same magazines I held in my hands as I daydreamed of a secret date with Davey Jones and made gum wrapper love chains (look here for instructions) that I mailed to Mickey Dolenz. Sorry Peter and Mike you were off my radar.

love chain - looked like this but much longer

Intermission

My attention deficit disorder kicked in and I found myself in the garage, I came out here to look for something, am easily distracted when I stumbled on a pile of wrapped canvases. Hmmm... wonder what's in here? I had these plastic wrapped bundles, labeled canvases to rework, canvases for framing, canvases for cocktails, so many labels must have been a past episode of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Here's what I found:

21" x 17" acrylic painting from collage

The year was 1971. I was 14 years old and a student at Roy H. Mann Jr. High school in Brooklyn, New York, this was my assignment- A study in tonal grays and blacks. I stretched this odd shaped canvas myself, hence the odd size.

For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed collage and especially drawing or painting from them once they were created.

"Snow Days"
15" x 20" acrylic painting from collage c.1975

This is a painting of a collage I had done with magazine images, cut and torn paper. I had moved to Denver, Colorado and was attending George Washington High School. I was 18 years old. I loved to ski, and at the time it was all I could think about.

18"x 24" acrylic painting, heavy molding paste
c. 1983

Another painting from a collage. It was my freshman year at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I was 26 years old. I still have all these collages.

I have since stopped painting from collages.

Well I hope you have enjoyed my little time travel and thanks for the visits.

WS- The Poet King

"My name is Federico Garcia Lorca"

8 x 11.5 mixed media- for Wednesday Stamper challenge "Kings"
molding paste, golden fluid acrylics, glitter,
asst'd. ephemera, B Line rubber stamps

"Great art depends upon a vivid awareness of death, connection with the nation's soil and acknowledgement of the limitations of reason" - Federico Garcia Lorca

For inquiring minds: Federico García Lorca (June 5th, 1898 - August 19, 1936 ) was a Spanish poet and dramatist, also remembered as a painter, pianist, and composer. He lived in Granada, Spain. He was a member of the "Generation of '27" an influential group of poets in Spanish literary circles from 1923-1927 with a desire for the Avante Garde art forms. He was close friends with Luis Banuel (known as the father of cinematic surrealism ) and Salvador Dali (Spanish surrealist painter) . He was killed by Nationalist partisans at the age of 38 at the at the start of the Spanish Civil War.

Here is one of his paintings.

...and a poem

Floating Bridges

Oh what a crush of People
Invisible, reborn
Make their way to into this garden
For their eternal rest

Every step we take on earth
Brings us to a new world
Every foot supported
On a floating bridge

I know there is no straight road
No straight road in this world
Only a giant labyrinth
Of intersecting crossroads

And steadily our feet
Keep walking and creating
Like enormous fans
These roads in embryo

Oh garden of white
Oh garden of all I am not
All I could
And should have been

I know there is no straight road
No straight road in this world
Only a giant labyrinth
Of intersecting crossroads

Comprendo que no existe
El camino derecho
Solo un gran labertino
De encrucijadas multiples

Thanks everyone for your visits and kind words!

At the end of the rainbow...

8 x 11.5 mixed media collage, layers of fluid acrylic paints
collage ephemera, colored markers, Caran d'Ache Neocolor II crayons
rubber stamps

Have you ever tried to get to the end of a rainbow? I have and guess what, I'm still on the road some 50 years later and haven't gotten any closer or maybe I have and I just didn't know it. What did I think I would find? a pot of gold, a farmhouse, field of poppies, the afterlife.

::::::: I interrupt this regular scheduled programming to say that my 'dear husband' who has been working tirelessly to restore my 1963 Mercury Meteor in the garage, just walked in the house and presented me with a special gift... a handful of assorted transmission springs for use in my art projects, he sure knows the way to my heart :::::: now back to our regular scheduled programming.

Whenever I see a rainbow I ask my husband do you think we could get to the end and he reminds me by his scientific mind that it is not possible that a rainbow is a phenomenon, a refractory of light, that it would be impossible. Geesh, I don't believe a word he says, why should I let him burst my rainbow bubble?

Now look here at this person below. Don't they seem close?

Well in the meantime, I'll keep dreaming because Dorothy says, "the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true."

Green Apple ala Seurat

Here's my contribution to Rima's digital workshop challenge on her blog Marazine.

After saving the apple image I imported into Mac's iPhoto and gave it two effects Antique and Vignette. In photoshop under the filter gallery menu I chose artistic pencil and manipulated the pencil effects. I edited the color gradient. I then selected pointillize under filter gallery menu, sharpened edges and added glow edge. The title of my piece is dedicated to Georges Seurat who was one of the greatest pointillist artists of the 19th century.

Early days at the MOMA

I present to you one of my journal covers.
Mixed media, vintage photo - 11 X14

"Everyday lived well makes yesterday a fond remembrance,
and every tomorrow a dream of hope"

There are many layers of paper, tissue, Golden acrylics, punched/stamped images stuck on this page. Here my sister Linda and I are visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the year 1962.

Growing up in New York with two artists for parents brought us to the museums on a regular basis. By the looks of things, sis appears distracted. Dad's behind the camera.

Have I mentioned my loving husband bought me a Paragon Kiln? with a bead door for annealing beads. I've got so much learning to do. It's back to work tomorrow...aarrgghh...after 10 glorious days off.

Be sure to visit my other blog: "The ArTfuL EyE" and thanks a million for stopping by.
